About Diaspora Ladies 4 Sierra Leone – DL4SL – Diaspora Ladies for Sierra Leone

Legal Status

We are a non-profit organisation seeking to aid deprived and neglected elderly people (Senior Citizens) in Sierra Leone. We are registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce with registration number 74664468. Diaspora Ladies for Sierra Leone(DL4SL) was founded in 2017 after some consultative meeting with few Sierra Leonean women living in Belgium and the Netherlands.

However, it was not until 2019 that the organisation was formally registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce as charity primarily to help the elderly people in Sierra Leone.

Background History

In a country where the pension schemes are negligible and culturally people have had to rely on their offspring to care for them and support them through their old age, Sierra Leone now finds itself in a new and unprecedented era. An era where a lot of elderly people find themselves deprived of the care of the younger generation due to the massive death tolls in the recent past caused by the ten+ years of rebel war, mass migration of the younger generation to find a better life, the Ebola crisis, mud slides, floods and the high unemployment rate among the young. All of these have had not only devastating effects on our economy, but also on our younger generation’s ability to care for their elderly.

In the light of this, Sierra Leone finds itself today in a situation where the senior citizens have become the most underprivileged of society and in a lot of cases completely neglected, deprived, forgotten and abandoned to live a life of squalor or to live in abject poverty without health care, adequate housing and sometimes even food. Sometimes people in their 70’s and 80’s have to bear the financial and physical burden of raising their grandchildren whose parents were killed during the rebel war or in some other of the numerous national disasters that have been part of our recent past.

Our Mission & Vision

DL4SL does not aim at making profit, it is not a business. We aim at giving back; we plan to give a helping hand! These are our mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, uncles, and aunts we are talking about. People who have given their blood, sweat and tears for our country and for us! These are people who have lived through some of the worst decades in the history of our country and they have survived! We are only trying to make their last years on earth better ones and more comfortable ones.

A little “Thank you” for all the sacrifices that they have made to give our generation and coming generations a chance for a better life. In order to achieve this, we, the ladies of this organization look forward to collaborating with any person, institution or organization that may believe in and share our mission and vision for the underprivileged senior citizens of Sierra Leone
